A Trip into the Heart of Old Varna

A century-old house is in the heart of the old town in Varna houses house the photograhic memory of the city. The Old Varna collection of photographs on permanent display shows how the city’s transformation from an Oriental town into a European city 120 years cack.

Guests are met at the door by Hadji Lambrin Sotoriv – the museum’s founder. Highly artistic and emotional, he takes visitors on an unusual journey into the city’s history stretching 120 years back, telling the story of each of the 320 unique photographs  from the late 19th and early 20th century, exhibited in three spacious halls. The visual journey starts at the railway station, strolls down the salubrious city thoroughfare to reach the true symbols of Varna – the theatre, the fire station, the imposing hotels, the clock, which tells the time propelled by Earth’s gravity. The journey then moves on to the first Bulgarian resort and comes to an end with the many remarkable events of the cultural, sports and social life of the city. The tale abounds in incredible events, jokes and nostalgic memories. These sweet memories are then compounded by a treat of white cherry jam.

Everyone would be able to feel the magic ambience of the most beautiful and clean city in Bulgaria – Varna.

Each sip of wine one has had here adds to one’s impressions and memories of Varna as it used to be over a century ago and the way it has remained to date – attractive, bursting with life and sunny – the pearl of the Black Sea. If visitors wish to they may pop down to the wine tasting cellar. Wine tasting is supervised by the museum’s manager and features traditional Bulgarian wines served with a selection of cheeses and meats.

At the museum postcards of old Varna are available for sale, as well as wine and rakia maps and a good selection of wines from wine cellars across the country.
